Mass Notification
  • The events that have unfolded earlier this year have caused a great swing in the Educational marketplace. New guides, standards and codes are being developed. Many were already ion the making but recent events has forced the industry to step up the pace. With that I would like to report on what these new papers are and were they are coming from. Many companies will or have started approaching the universities with their bag of products and calling it “Mass Notification”. I offer to provide a training session on exactly what Mass Notification is, what NFPA, NEMA and other organizations are doing.    -Presented and Sponsored by SimplexGrinnell

Fire Protection - Fire Alarms, Sprinkler System, and Fire Extinguishers
  • How to effectively inspect, test and maintain your own equipment.

  • I would like to present my approach towards ITM of fire protections systems.  This is a huge subject and task demanding when manpower and resources are limited.  Doing nothing is not the answer, creating a program and building on that foundation is the right action.  It’s scary having all of the standards to follow, having no one to turn to, and trying to do the right thing.  It takes dedication and support to make it all happen, it can happen and it should be happening. - Presented by Brady/TISCOR. Sponsored by Blazemaster

Room 2
Public Access - AEDs
  • What's public access to defibrillation? Public access to defibrillation means making AEDs available in public and/or private places where large numbers of people gather or people who are at high risk for heart attacks live.
  • What is an AED? The automated external defibrillator (AED) is a computerized medical device. An AED can check a person’s heart rhythm. It can recognize a rhythm that requires a shock. And it can advise the rescuer when a shock is needed. The AED uses voice prompts, lights and text messages to tell the rescuer the steps to take.
  • Today's Program: Funding & Liability AED/EMT's operating Budget, Grants, Donations, Medical Control, Good Samaritan Law), Implementation (type, placement, reporting of AED) Training (Trainer, Medical Officer/EMT, Longevity) - Presented by the American Red Cross. Sponsored by Knox-Box

The Next Generation in Safety and Response Training
  • A fire service leader and training officer discusses the lessons learned from designing and implementing interactive training through the practice of Immersive Simulation.  In the past, conventional training has not allowed students to develop and test their response skills in a realistic environment.  Skills are often taught independent of one another and their interaction is often not realized by the student.  With Immersive Simulation however, trainees are placed in a simulated environment with a number of environmental variables and must exhibit the correct decision making process to achieve a desirable outcome.  This session will discuss strategies on developing comprehensive response training involving environmental assessment, decision making, action and reaction.  An overview of new tools and techniques used in the industry is also provided.  - Presented by BullEx Digital Safety. Sponsored by Bullex.

Awesome Responsibility - Fatal Fire & You a case study.
  • When we choose to work on a campus, whether big or small, you accept responsibility for the lives of every faculty & staff member, student and visitor that comes onto your property. Most of the time that’s not a problem. But, what do we do when fire occurs? What do we do when faced with the death of a student? Awesome Responsibility reminds us that it can happen at your institution, wherever you are. And when tragedy strikes; administration will turn to you for the response and the answers....
  • When a Residence Hall burns and a student dies, you do have an awesome responsibility.
·        HOW do you prepare for it?
·        WHAT hidden issues pop up, now & later?
·        WHEN is it over? (How long is the aftermath?)
IT CAN HAPPEN HERE. And when tragedy strikes - administration turns to
          YOU for response and expertise.

Southern Adventist University had a fire and lost one student. Some things
we did very well. Others, we didn’t even think of. You’re responsible for
faculty, staff, student, and visitor lives. Are you ready?
         - Presented by Southern Adventist University

YOU set the agenda. - Presented/Moderated by the Center For Campus Fire Safety.

Smoke detectors
  • Residential smoke alarms provide an important notification to individuals within a residential setting that there is a presence of smoke and/or fire. Over the last four decades, several studies have been conducted to determine the response of smoke alarms and to assist in establishing performance criteria for their use in residential settings. These studies have led to the development and subsequent revisions of UL Standard 217 Single and Multiple Station Smoke Alarms, as well as a National Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72) that addresses smoke alarm installation requirements. - Presented by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL)
